Located in the bustling Hillsdale Mall of San Mateo, Flores San Mateo offers a vibrant and upscale take on Mexican cuisine that delights both casual diners and food enthusiasts alike. This restaurant’s menu is a treasure trove of authentic flavors, skillfully blending traditional Mexican ingredients with fresh, contemporary twists that bring each dish to life.
Flores San Mateo shines most brilliantly with its tacos—especially the Chicken Carnitas and Carne Asada varieties, which boast tender, juicy meats wrapped in warm, hand-pressed corn tortillas. The Fish Tacos are another standout, featuring perfectly grilled cod that delivers a succulent, flaky bite complemented by vibrant sauces and fresh accompaniments. For a hearty yet sophisticated meal, the Mixed Plate presents a satisfying medley of chicken, steak, and prawns served alongside rice and beans, although it calls for a bit more generosity in tortillas to truly feel complete.
The burrito lineup will please every palate, from the slow-roasted citrus pork bursting with flavor in the Burrito Carnitas, to the tender, braised chicken in the Burrito Adobo Chicken, and even the veggie-friendly option loaded with adobo trumpet mushrooms and nopales. Each burrito is expertly layered with rice, beans, creamy avocado, queso fresco, and fresh pico de gallo to create a perfectly balanced, mouthwatering bite.
Equally impressive are the fajitas, which arrive sizzling and aromatic. Whether you select the Chicken Fajitas grilled with pollo adobo and poblanos, the Mixta Fajitas combining grilled steak, chicken, and Mexican shrimp, or the Shrimp and Arrachera variations, the tender grilled meats and seafood alongside fresh tortillas offer an experience that engages all the senses.
Don’t miss the traditional sides and appetizers like Sautéed Corn, Fingerling Potatoes, and the distinctive Sikil Pak, a flavorful Mayan-style pumpkin seed sauce that adds an extra touch of regional authenticity. Pair your meal with classic Mexican beverages such as Margaritas, Micheladas, or the creatively crafted Mariachi Old Fashioned to elevate the entire dining experience.
When it comes to dessert, Flores San Mateo excels with treats like the velvety Tres Leches cake, enriched with coconut milk, cream cheese frosting, and almonds—a luscious finale that lingers pleasantly on the palate. The housemade Churros served with caramel dipping sauce and the silky Flan also provide sublime sweetness to perfectly round off your meal.
The restaurant’s ambiance complements the food beautifully. Guests describe the atmosphere as lively and energetic, with a spacious setup that feels both inviting and upscale—a rare find within a mall setting. The presence of both tall bar tables and standard seating gives guests flexible options whether they’re out for a casual bite or a spirited night with friends.
While some customers have noted occasional slow service and billing challenges for larger groups, these are minor quibbles compared to the overall quality and authenticity of the cuisine. In fact, many diners, including first-time skeptics lured in by lower online ratings, express pleasant surprise at just how satisfying a visit to Flores San Mateo can be.
For those seeking a culinary escape into the rich traditions of Mexican cooking—served with a modern, polished flare—Flores San Mateo is a destination that goes beyond expectations. Whether you’re craving the comfort of a hearty burrito, the zest of freshly grilled fajitas, or the indulgent sweetness of desserts like Tres Leches and Flan, this restaurant is a flavorful journey worth savoring.
Went here for Sunday Brunch and the food was good. I was pleasantly surprised. Wished they had more choices for brunch but overall I had a good experience.
Updated - Visited on the Valentine’s Day. The server was pretty much messed up. They shuffled some orders with other tables. It was hard to find the server to order as well. Overall food expense was good. Much better than expected by a their lower reviews! Now, this is one of my favorite places in town. I was a little bit hesitant to go to this place because of lower reviews, but it turned out it was good The service was very good, which wasn't like the reviews, and the inside of the restaurant was surprisingly nice. Good vibes for families and couples and any occasion My dog is also having a great time inside the restaurant; it is very dog-friendly!
Flores in San Mateo has an upscale feel with a spacious setup right in Hillsdale Mall. The vibe is energetic and lively. The tacos were excellent, and the chicken salad was a pleasant surprise with great flavor. The veggie quesadilla was also worth trying.
Our group visited Flores San Mateo and it was a nice time. The food was better than my last visit but the service was on the slow side and they really weren't able to accommodate our largee group. The billing was inconvenient and for an establishment they arranged their furniture for larger groups they should have a system that allows for separate checks. The atmosphere was good and I really enjoyed the chips.
Fun atmosphere for this upscale Mexican restaurant. There is a full bar, tall tables or short tables. We ordered the Mixed Plate for 2 which has chicken, steak and prawns. Came with rice and beans. My only complain is that it came with only 3 corn tortillas. When the name of the dish says it’s for 2 people, how about giving us 4 tortillas instead of 3? Other than that, food was good. Parking is at the mall parking lot/structure.
Nicely decorated restaurant, located in the Hillsdale Mall, serving elevated Mexican food. Everything we had was well-cooked and beautifully presented. All three sauces with the chips were delicious, and complemented the margarita perfectly. Fast and friendly service. Great place to hang out with friends!
Flores San Mateo is a truly delightful spot that delivers fantastic, fresh Mexican flavors. We were thoroughly impressed with everything we tried, from the perfectly seasoned guacamole that was clearly made in-house, to the cheesy, comforting quesadilla and the generously loaded nachos. I especially appreciated the robust and flavorful veggie bowl, showing they have great options for everyone. Additionally, the non-alcoholic drink I ordered was expertly crafted and incredibly refreshing. It's a wonderful, reliable restaurant for authentic and high-quality Mexican food.
Good food, good flavors, pricey and portions are not huge but it makes for a good meal. Tried four different tacos and the fish taco and the carne asada taco are the absolute winners here. Like, really, order those. Guac was also good but very small portion, with plenty of home made tortilla chips. Rating service as low as our server was a bit pushy to get us started with appetizers the moment we seated and she did not take well that we asked for a bit of time.
